Bordered by major arterial roads, including West Street, Bridge Street, James Street and Hume Street, Toowoomba City is one of the major commercial destinations in Toowoomba. Ruthven Street, which splits the suburb north to south, is literally the heart of the city, both in terms of business activities and its cultural, and spiritual impact.Margaret Street is also located in this suburb. ‘Eat Street’, as it is also known, is home to a diverse range of high quality restaurants, as well as the Strand Cinema and Toowoomba’s major shopping centre, Grand Central.
Traffic in the city is often criticised, as is the lack of parking. This is a shame given the range of facilities available in this area and the atmosphere provided by historic buildings, beautifully landscaped gardens and commercial buzz.
According to Bureau of Statistics, around 2300 people live in Toowoomba City. 41.5 per cent of the households are lone person households, which is above average. The city has a relatively high unemployment rate at 8.6 per cent which is above the 5.2 per cent national average.
There are 1127 private dwellings in CBD and around 36.5 per cent are flats, units or apartments. Median rent in the Toowoomba City is $145 per week, which is relatively low, and median housing loan repayments are $953, which is below average. Just over half of the dwellings in the CBD are being rented with just 19.5 per cent being fully owned and 16.2 per cent being purchased.
The median weekly individual income of people living in the city is $363 which is well below average. The weekly median household income is also well below average at $605. Of the families living in the city, 21.7 per cent are one-parent families which is relatively high.
