Highfields

Highfields is a small town of around 6500 people which lies just ten kilometres from the middle of Toowoomba. Highfields is developing rapidly, and while not technically a suburb of Toowoomba, it is fast becoming an important part of the region.

The small community has found a niche and is exploiting it. With larger housing blocks, a range of art and craft stores as well as gourmet food outlets and quiet cafés, Highfields could be described as Toowoomba’s hinterland. With the monthly Cabarlah Country Markets just up the road, two shopping complexes, a Cultural Centre, library and two primary schools, Highfields certainly has the facilities and vision to continue growing for years to come.

There are no flats, units or apartments in Highfields, and 75 per cent of the 2200 dwellings are separate houses. The median weekly rent in Highfields is $270, which is well above the national average, and the median monthly housing loan repayment is $1300, which is equal to the national average.

Almost half of the dwellings in Highfields are being paid off, which is relatively high, and just 11 per cent are being rented. 88.6 per cent of the households in Highfields are family households and just 8.8 per cent are people living alone. 71.7 per cent of the people aged over 15 are married, which is relatively high. The median individual income is $539, which is above average, and the median household income per week is $1289, which is above average. Of the families living in Highfields, 55.8 per cent are couples living with children, which is a relatively large proportion compared to other suburbs of Toowoomba. In short, many of the residents of Highfields are families and many of them have higher than average incomes.
