The area located within Stenner Street, West Street, Hayden Street and Drayton Road is Darling Heights. Home to around 5000 people, this suburb is one of the few in Toowoomba which contain more males than females.The median age of people living here is 24, making this suburb one of the youngest suburbs in Toowoomba. One third of the residents are aged between 15 and 24 which is understandable considering the University of Southern Queensland is located within it.
The proximity to the university also explains the fact that 53% of the people living in this suburb are single and that a relatively large number of dwellings are group households (10.5%) rather than family households or people living alone.
The median individual income per week is $350 while the media household income is $1 034 per week. The average rent is high at $205 per week compared to the national average of $190 per week and the median monthly housing loan repayment is below average at $1 100. 41.4 per cent of the private dwellings in this suburb are being rented.
Of the 1 596 private dwellings in Darling Heights, 85.5% are separate houses with a low proportion of flats, units or apartments at 4% which is surprising given it is home to many university students.
