Toowoomba Grammar School
Toowoomba Grammar School is an independent, non-denominational, day and boarding grammar school for boys.Founded in 1875, the Toowoomba Grammar School was the third Grammar School to be established in Queensland. The original school building was designed by Willoughby Powell in ‘Domestic Gothic’ style and completed in 1876. Students were admitted the following year. Mr John Mackintosh was the first principal of the school and 44 boys were enrolled: 20 boarders and 24 dayboys.
The Toowoomba Grammar School is non-denominational, although, it has a Christian ethos, and follows a non-selective enrolment policy. Approximately 930 students attend the school from Reception to Year 12, which includes around 300 s.
The school facilities include the WM Dent Library and IT Centre, Art and Industrial Arts building, swimming pool and extensive sporting fields.
As well as the core subjects, the Toowoomba Grammar School offers senior students the following electives: Art, French, Japanese, Music, Music Extension, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Multi-strand Science, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics C, Physical Education, Geography, Ancient History, Modern history, Drama, Information Processing Technology, Agricultural Science, Technology Studies, Manufacturing, Certificate 3/4 Information Technology and Certificate 2/3 Agriculture.
The school originally had ten houses, however they were amalgamated to stop any rivalry between dayboys and s. The five houses are:Groom-Freshney - GreenStephens-Partridge - BlueBoyce-Henderson - MaroonTaylor-Gibson - BlackMackintosh-Chauvel - Red
Tuition fees at the school range from $4,152 to $9,216 per year depending on the grade, and boarding costs between $2,856 and $3,360 per term. There is also an $800 enrolment fee. In 2007, eight boys from the Toowoomba Grammar School obtained an Overall Position (OP) of 1 and 39 per cent of the graduating class achieved between an OP 1 and 6.
